Chris Dobey suffered defeat at the hands of Daryl Gurney to exit the World Darts Championship in round three.

Hollywood lost 4-1 to Super Chin in a tight game, losing out on a third straight last 16 appearance at Alexandra Palace.

The first set predicted what was to come in the contest. After both held throw twice, including a 90 finish from Dobey, it came down to a deciding leg. There, Gurney almost found a big fish 170 outshot, but came back to clean up 25 and go one set up. Dobey had the darts in the second set, but with the score at 1-1, missed bull for a 130 finish. Gurney, who’d hit 116 the previous visit to set up double 16, hit it to break. Superchin then found an 11 darter leg on throw to win the set 3-1 and double his advantage.

Hollywood hit back in the third set, breaking in the opening leg with a 13 darter. However, Gurney found a 14 darter in response to get a break of his own, before two holds saw a fifth and deciding leg. Dobey missed double 13 for the set, and the Northern Irishman swooped in, cleaning up 50 to go one away from the match.

Dobey though would not quit easily. After holding twice, including a 97 outshot, he then punished a missed dart at double 16 from his opponent. He found double 10 to win the set 3-1, and trail by the same scoreline. Sadly though, that was to be the last leg he won, as Gurney reeled off the fifth set with three straight 14 darters, to win 4-1 and move into a game against Vincent van der Voort.

It’s been a tough end to the year for Hollywood, but there were glimpses throughout the tournament that he’s on his way back to his best. We’re looking forward to seeing what Chris can achieve in 2021.

Team Dunvegan though still has one man in action at the event. The Flying Scotsman, Gary Anderson, will face Devon Petersen in round four action on Wednesday 30 December. It will be the final game of the afternoon session.
